Unaesthetic scar correction surgery provides minimization of scars caused by accidents or previous surgical procedures, making the skin tone and surrounding texture uniform.

Most often scar correction provides a more pleasing aesthetic result, improves a scar that has poor healing, and reduces the volume and extent of the mark.

Treatment options vary by type and degree of healing and may include:

Simple topical treatments,

Minimally invasive procedures,

Surgical revision with advanced wound closure techniques.

Anesthesia Type:

General anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation, depending on each patient.

Surgical technique:

Surgical correction of the unsightly scar is made through incisions in its entire extension. The incision may be made approximately one millimeter inside the scar or approximately one millimeter outside the scar, depending on each case. After making the incisions, the surgeon removes the entire scar using a scalpel or delicate scissors.

Absorbable internal stitches are made and the outer part can be made with intradermal stitches (which are hidden within the incision) or single stitches. One can choose to close the incision also with the use of a biological tape with glue, which completely seals the incision and allows the patient to bathe and wet the operated area on the same day. This surgery can be done with general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation.

Scar Types:

- Discoloration, surface irregularities and more subtle scars can be aesthetically enhanced with surgery or treatments recommended by the plastic surgeon. These scars, which do not impair function or cause physical discomfort, include scars from acne, minor injuries and previous surgical incisions.

- Hypertrophic scars are thick clumps of scar tissues that develop at the site of healing. These scars are usually tall, red and / or uncomfortable, and may become larger over time. They may be hyperpigmented (darker) or hypopigmented (lighter).

- Keloids are larger than hypertrophic scars and can be painful, itchy and also wrinkled. They extend beyond the edges of an initial wound or incision and can occur anywhere on the body, but are most common in places where there is little underlying fat tissue such as the face, neck, ears, chest and in the shoulders.

- Contractures are scars that restrict movement due to the joining of the skin and underlying tissue during healing. Contractures occur when there is a large amount of tissue loss and can also form where the wound joins the joint, restricting the ones of fingers, elbows, knees and neck.

Surgery Time:

Scars up to four centimeters take approximately 30 minutes. Scars that are between four and 15 centimeters can take up to an hour.

It is indicated to interrupt physical activities for 7 days, not being necessary to leave work or routine activities. After surgery you may need to use ointments, creams or even local compression, as advised by the specialist.

The patient should avoid sun exposure for 30 days and always use sunscreen.

Possible complications:

Plastic surgery for scars have some possible complications that should be considered, once the patient aims to improve or minimize accident traces or surgical procedures that were previously performed. May occur:

Opening of stitches;

Loss of sensitivity.

The end result of plastic surgery for scars, as in all cosmetic surgeries, will depend on the reaction of the patient's body and zeal with pre and postoperative indications.

Preoperative Recommendations

The patient's lifestyle and care before the operation are decisive factors for every surgical outcome. Check out the most important recommendations:
